A big thank you to outgoing Deputy Mayor Nancy Liu for her leadership over the past 12 months. We’re proud that together with Mayor Borg, they formed Georges River Council’s first all-female leadership team.

Leadership Positions retained for GRRRP

Our GRRRP Team has retained their leadership roles as Committee Chairs and Advisory Committee representatives. These reappointments ensure stability, continuity, and a strong foundation for leadership at Council. 

The following Committee chairs were re-elected for the next 12 months:

• Chair of Assets and Infrastructure Committee: Cr Natalie Mort.

• Chair of Environment and Planning Committee: Cr Peter Mahoney.

• Chair of Community and Culture Committee: Cr Kathryn Landsberry.

• Chair of Finance and Governance Committee: Cr Christina Jamieson.

  Leader Article: New Deputy Mayor

We’re proud to announce that Georges River Council has voted to fund a dedicated Learn to Swim pool as part of the new Carss Park Aquatic Facility. This isn’t just an upgrade, it’s lifesaving infrastructure.

The facts:

• 50% of 12 year olds can’t swim 50m or tread water for 2 minutes

• 10M+ children’s swim lessons were missed during the pandemic

• Drowning deaths hit a record high last year — up 14%

A Learn to Swim pool means:

• Safer, warmer and more accessible lessons

• Additional capacity to meet growing demand

Georges River Council has officially endorsed Olds Park, Penshurst as the preferred site for a new 2,500 m² district library to serve the western half of the LGA.

Next steps: Council will now determine funding and timing for the new Penshurst library while continuing to revitalise, reimagine and transform councils existing branch libraries at South Hurstville, Oatley and Penshurst.

Honouring Dr Sharyn Cullis

Council has endorsed the proposal to name the new boardwalk at Morshead Drive Reserve the Sharyn Cullis Boardwalk.

Dr Cullis dedicated her life to protecting the Georges River, our bushland, and our community — the very environment this boardwalk was built to preserve.

Following her tragic and early passing in June 2022, Councillor Mahoney moved a condolence motion noting: “As principal of Georges River Environmental Centre and secretary of the Georges River Environmental Alliance, Sharyn lived and breathed the river and its environs, including bushland areas and tributaries.”

GRRRP strongly supported this motion, recognising it as a fitting and lasting tribute that will ensure her extraordinary legacy is remembered by future generations. The proposed name will now be placed on public exhibition for community feedback.

At the September Council meeting, Mayor Borg moved a Mayoral Minute calling on the State Government to strengthen the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021.

The current legislation has left councils unable to act quickly on abandoned items such as boat trailers, caravans, shopping trolleys, and unregistered vehicles — frustrating residents and reducing safety and accessibility in our streets. GRRRP strongly supported the call for reforms to give councils the clear powers needed to act swiftly and keep public spaces safe and accessible.

Council supported a motion from Councillor Mort calling for a proactive pavement line marking program to improve road safety. Faded or missing markings on stop signs, give-way lines, and pedestrian crossings have created risks for pedestrians and drivers alike. By using recent road audit data, Council can identify priority areas at minimal additional cost, ensuring line marking is targeted where it makes the most impact. GRRRP strongly supported this practical step to make Georges River streets safer for all road users.

Have Your Say - Blakehurst & Kogarah Bay Flood Study 

Georges River Council is inviting community feedback on the draft flood study for Blakehurst and Kogarah Bay Wards.

This study aims to help Council better understand how stormwater behaves during heavy rainfall events and will guide us to improve drainage where it’s needed - ensuring homes and properties are better protected

Narwee town centre is divided by council boundaries, but united in one opinion – our main street needs some love.

Councillor Jamieson submitted a Notice of Motion to Georges River Council calling for a collaborative plan with the City of Canterbury Bankstown to refresh Narwee. Our shopping village deserves the same care and investment as other centres – clean, green, safe, and welcoming.
