As 2024 comes to a close, we’d like to extend our warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

This year has been a whirlwind, highlighted by the local government elections in September. We were thrilled to expand our representation on Georges River Council with the election of Councillor Matt Allison, who joins our returning Councillors Natalie Mort, Peter Mahoney, Christina Jamieson, and Elise Borg.

This incredible outcome would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our dedicated volunteers and supporters—thank you for standing with us.

Together, we are committed to making Georges River an even better, fairer, and more prosperous community for all.

ELISE BORG ELECTED MAYOR

We were thrilled to celebrate a historic milestone in October 2024, with the election of Councillor Elise Borg as Mayor of Georges River Council. Elise proudly became the first female Mayor of Georges River and the first female Mayor from the former Kogarah Council side in its 125-year history.

Adding to this achievement, Elise leads an all-female leadership team, joined by Councillor Nancy Liu as Deputy Mayor—a first for our Council.

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS FOR GRRRP

We are also delighted that GRRRP continues to hold significant leadership positions on Georges River Council, ensuring strong representation for our community:

Councillor Christina Jamieson has been re-elected Chair of the Finance & Governance Committee.

Councillor Peter Mahoney was re-elected Chair of the Environment & Planning Committee.

Councillor Natalie Mort will serve as a Councillor Representative to the Georges River Sports Advisory Committee and the NSW Public Libraries Association.

Councillor Matt Allison has been appointed the Councillor Representative to Georges Riverkeeper.

We are proud of our team’s commitment to these key roles and look forward to delivering for our community!

CARSS PARK POOL UPDATE

🏊 Exciting Progress on the Carss Park Aquatic Facility!

At the November 2024 Council Meeting, we reached a significant milestone in the journey towards the construction of a new pool at Carss Park!

Georges River Council has committed $10 million over the next three years to support the reconstruction of the Carss Park Aquatic Facility, in partnership with the NSW Government.

What’s next? The NSW Office of Sport will now take the lead on progressing the detailed designs and obtaining development consent for the new aquatic facility.

This project represents a major investment in our community’s future, and we’re excited to see it take shape.

🔧 Remediation Update:

The demolition and remediation of the former Kogarah War Memorial Pool site in Carss Park is now complete!

Georges River Council is currently awaiting final sign-off on the remediation by an EPA Accredited Auditor (an external consultant). Once this final approval is received, it will signal the completion of the Development Application (DA) process, allowing Council to:

• Remove the construction fencing.

• Open this temporary space for the community to enjoy while progress continues on the new aquatic centre.

This marks an exciting step forward in transforming the site into a space that serves our community.

SHAPING HOUSING IN GEORGES RIVER

A key achievement during the last term of Council was the endorsement of the Council-led Integrated Planning Proposals for Additional Housing, Biodiversity, Character, and the Foreshore Scenic Protection Area.

These Planning Proposals sets out a roadmap for the creation of 8,083 net additional dwellings, while ensuring the protection of:

• Terrestrial biodiversity

• Foreshore scenic character

• The unique local character of our area

Our GRRRP Councillors are deeply aware of the housing crisis and strongly support delivering additional homes through a balanced, integrated approach that respects the values and priorities of our community.

The current status is that these Planning Proposals have been lodged on the NSW Planning Portal for a Gateway Determination as of 23 July 2024. GRRRP Councillors eagerly await the Gateway Determination to be issued by the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure (DPHI).

This milestone reflects our dedication to addressing housing needs while safeguarding the identity and environment of Georges River.
