It is one month since our four Georges River Residents & Ratepayers candidates were sworn in as Georges River Councillors at an Extraordinary Meeting on 30 December. What an amazing way to end the year.

Our party campaigned on a platform to change the Council, and we’re proud to have started that change by voting for a new Leadership Team that includes a Mayor and Deputy Mayor who have both previously voted to support the rebuilding of Kogarah War Memorial Pool at Carss Park.

Congratulations to Councillor Nick Katris, the Mayoral nominee of his party and the nominee voted for by Team GRRRP, who was successful in being elected as Mayor.

Congratulations also to Councillor Kathryn Landsberry who was the Deputy Mayoral nominee of her party and who was elected unopposed to the position of Deputy Mayor.

We look forward to working with the new Leadership Team to achieve great outcomes for the community.

Georges Riverkeeper

The GRCCC works closely with the Georges Riverkeeper, one of Australia’s longest serving catchment management groups and eight member councils. The objective is to look after the Georges River to protect natural resources and improve liveability along the Georges River. 

Peter has a longstanding passion for protecting the environment and the health of our waterways and looks forward to representing Council on behalf of the community on the GRCCC.

At an Extraordinary Meeting of Georges River Council on 24 January, a motion was unanimously passed to fully support protecting ‘Glenlee’ at 80 Boronia Parade, Lugarno by the future gazettal of a new Interim Heritage Order (IHO) to be in place on the site for another 12 months.

The request for the Extraordinary Meeting was made in mid-January by Georges River Residents & Ratepayers Councillor, Peter Mahoney, with the knowledge that the current Interim Heritage Order (IHO) on the property would soon lapse; before the first sitting of Council on 28 February, and soon after the upcoming Land & Environment Court conciliation conference.

Georges River Residents & Ratepayers Councillors were pleased when on Friday 21 January, it was announced that the NSW State Government would this week be gazetting a new IHO for 12 months to protect and preserve Glenlee and pursue listing ‘Glenlee’ on the State Heritage Register. 

We are so pleased that this first meeting of Georges River Council was a unanimous decision to support protecting and preserving the ‘once in a lifetime’ property, Glenlee. 

We thank Councillors Wang, Symington and Landsberry for seeing the urgency and supporting the four GRRRP Councillors in calling for the Extraordinary Meeting on this matter.

We thank Mayor Katris for his support and our fellow Councillors for unanimously supporting the community to protect Glenlee for a further 12 months.

Glenlee comprises 2.5 hectares Lugarno property and is one of the last privately-owned lots on the banks of the Georges River to be developed. Established in 1908, it comprises mostly of open space but also a homestead built in 1910, a working farm, a considerable amount of native (including endangered) flora and fauna and evidence of Aboriginal occupation through the discovery of a significant amount of artefacts. The property is historically, culturally and environmentally significant to Georges River and beyond.

WELCOMING NEW CITIZENS ON AUSTRALIA DAY

Georges River Residents & Ratepayers Councillors Natalie Mort, Christina Jamieson and Elise Borg attended the Georges River Council Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day at Marana Auditorium, Hurstville.

It was such an honour to see so many people proudly complete their Australian citizenship journey. We were very privileged and also very proud to hear Mr Brendan Kerin from the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council perform the Welcome to Country.

Congratulations to all the new Australians who took an oath or affirmation and became citizens of this great country. We wish all new citizens a prosperous future and hope they make the most of the land of opportunity.

BRINGING IN THE YEAR OF THE TIGER

Councillors Natalie Mort and Christina Jamieson attended the Georges River Council's Little Lunar event in Hurstville on Friday 28 January to celebrate bringing in the Year of the Tiger 

It was great to see so many people out enjoying the traditional lion dance, wonderful Chinese cuisine and other cultural performances.
