Georges River Council stop pushing through mega development and rezoning changes during COVID-19

Council is proposing major rezoning of residential areas and increased housing densities in both Beverly Hills and Mortdale. The Beverly Hills Town Centre Master Plan includes up to 10 storey buildings in the commercial centre and 4 storey units in surrounding streets to create 1500 new units while the Mortdale Master Plan will create 969 new units. The Beverly Hills plan also involves the extensive compulsory acquisition of people’s homes.

Both Master Plans will generate more traffic congestion on our local roads, parking problems, overshadowing, and loss of privacy. Schools and public transport are already at capacity.

COVID-19 restrictions have prevented the community from meeting to discuss and spread awareness and to consult with Council staff during the exhibition periods of both Master Plans. This interaction is extremely important, as these plans will have long-term, drastic impacts on everybody who lives in Beverly Hills and Mortdale.

The Beverly Hills and Mortdale Master Plans should be halted until COVID-19 restrictions have been fully lifted because:

  • Both Master Plans have long-term impacts and genuine community consultation has not and can not occur whilst Covid-19 restrictions are in place

  • The community can not meet to discuss and spread awareness of the plans

  • Genuine face-to-face consultation has not occurred with Council staff

  • The Master Plans will have long-term impacts that will change the face of both communities

  • The Beverly Hills Master Plan severely impacts many families who will have their homes compulsory acquired

  • Georges River Council is meeting its housing targets, so there is no need to accelerate these Master Plans during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
