State Significant Developments Overreach
Subject: Concern About State Significant Development Overreach in Georges River
To: The Hon. Chris Minns MP
Premier of New South Wales
Dear Premier Minns,
I am writing as a resident of the Georges River area to express my concern about the increasing use of State Significant Development (SSD) pathways to approve large-scale developments that override local planning controls and limit meaningful input from local councils and communities.
While I recognise the need to address the housing shortage, proposals for developments of up to 20 storeys in areas currently planned for much lower density risk dramatically changing established neighbourhoods and placing additional pressure on already stretched infrastructure such as roads, transport, schools, health services, and open space.
Local councils understand their communities and infrastructure capacity, yet the current SSD process often provides only limited consultation after key decisions have already been made.
I urge the NSW Government to ensure major development proposals include genuine consultation with councils and communities, are aligned with infrastructure capacity, and deliver responsible, well-planned growth.
Our communities support housing growth, but it must be fair, transparent, and sustainable.
Sincerely,
